You Can’t Beet This

There’s been a lot of chatter on Twitter about the brown/red color of the snow around the sidewalks of campus.


An update was provided by Rob Reeder, assistant director for Facilities Maintenance, in response to several comments and concerns.


The new ice melting product being tested on campus sidewalks includes a 50 percent solution from a sugar beet byproduct. It is not an oil-based product. The ice melt’s darker color is attributed to the sugar beet base.


Facilities is testing the product as another campus effort to be environmentally friendly, Reeder said, and the product is being used on other campuses across the country with good results.
